Taiwanese chip design company MediaTek said on Friday that it had
submitted a request to the US government for permission to continue supplying
Huawei, China, after the new US restrictions came into effect in mid-September
amid escalating tensions between China and the United States.
Earlier this month, the Trump administration expanded its
restrictions on Huawei and prohibited suppliers from selling chips made with
the use of technology to the Chinese company without a special license.
MediaTech, which analysts said may be among the hardest hit after the
recent restrictions, said it would follow relevant global trade regulations and
applied for permission to ship to Huawei after September 15th.
"MediaTech reiterates its respect to follow relevant orders and
rules regarding global trade, and has already applied for permission from the
US side in accordance with the rules," the company said in a brief
statement without going into details.
The US move announced this month fills potential loopholes in its previous
sanctions in May, which could have allowed Huawei to purchase chips using US
technology through third parties.
The restrictions underscore the growing friction in Sino-US relations
as Washington presses governments to put pressure on Huawei, claiming that the
company will deliver the data to Beijing on charges of espionage. Huawei denies
it is spying for China.
TSMC - the world's largest chip maker - said last month that it had
stopped receiving new orders from the Chinese telecommunications giant and
smartphones in May and was not planning to ship the chips after September 15.
