Amazon today announced the addition of a podcast feature to its Amazon Music streaming service, dropping Spotify's shares of more than 6 percent.
The US e-commerce giant said in a statement: that users in the United
States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan will be able to broadcast the
podcast for free across all levels of the service Amazon Music.
The company offers users a set of paid and free, ad-supported options
to access the Amazon Music service. Prime customers also get access to over 2
million songs without ads as part of their $ 119 yearly membership.
The company is launching the podcast feature as the industry becomes
increasingly competitive. Spotify has invested heavily in the production of the
original podcast and has acquired four companies to expand its library,
including: The Ringer, Gimlet Media, Anchor and Parcast. Meanwhile, Apple's
Podcasts app hosts a host of content for free, and it installs by default on
iPhones.
The company will offer listeners original and curated content. Its
music streaming service will feature popular podcasts such as: Radiolab, Planet
Money, and Crime Junkie, in addition to original shows produced exclusively for
the celebrity-hosted service, such as producer DJ Khaled, actor Will Smith and sports broadcaster Dan Patrick and musician Becky G. Starting in
February, Amazon will be the exclusive agent for Disgraceland, a popular
podcast program.
The multimedia podcast program hosted by Becky G will demonstrate a new
integration between services (Amazon Music) and (Twitch), an integration
that was announced earlier this month. This feature allows musicians to link
their personal files on the Amazon-owned video site to the streaming service,
allowing users to watch live Twitch content in the music app.
The company said: Its Echo voice-activated devices will pull content
from Amazon's music library when users ask their devices to play a podcast.
