Qualcomm is ramping up efforts to put 5G mobile phones within the reach of billions of people and support new connected laptops targeting the growing number of people working at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today, Thursday, the American chipmaker launched a version that
supports fifth-generation networks of its Snapdragon 4 chipset, intended for
low-spec smartphones with a price between $ 125 and $ 250, which will be put on
the market in the first quarter of next year.
"It will fulfill a promise to make 5G accessible to all
smartphone users," said (Cristiano Amon) - President of Qualcomm - in an
opening speech to the IFA Consumer Technology Exhibition in the German capital
Berlin.
It is noteworthy that the three-day event, which attracted 240,000
visitors last year, is closed to the public this year due to the epidemic.
Instead, it is being held as a “hybrid” event featuring a mix of online events,
personal events of trade and media.
Qualcomm also announced a 5G platform to support
"always-on" laptops that are in high demand among people who work at
home and who need fast and secure connections to log into company networks or
join group video calls.
In an interview with Reuters, Amon predicted that the growth in
connected computers will withstand more than the epidemic as consumers demand
features comparable to those found in the best smartphones.
Qualcomm, the world's largest supplier of cell phone chips, says 5G
networks - which enable ultra-fast downloads and power to connected devices and
factories - are being built much faster than previously expected.
Amon said: Eighty mobile phone operators have deployed 5G networks,
expecting 750 million 5G-enabled smartphones to ship in 2022 and 5G connections
will reach 1 billion in the following year; That is two years faster than 4G.
And at last year's IFA event, Qualcomm achieved huge success by
launching 5G chips for mid-range phones. The Snapdragon 4 processor complements
the 5G range, which is aimed at a potential audience of over 3.5 billion
people. Smartphone manufacturers: Motorola, Oppo and Xiaomi have registered to
make 5G phones with Snapdragon 4.
Qualcomm has also partnered with Taiwanese company Acer to market 5G computers that run on the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G platform, which features multi-day battery life, enterprise-grade security, and advanced cameras and audio.
