Zoom supports two-factor authentication for desktop and mobile devices

Zoom video conferencing service began supporting two-factor authentication for application on desktop or mobile devices, giving users the option to add an extra layer of security to their account, in addition to a standard password.

The company said in a post on its blog: that users can activate the two-factor authentication feature through the Zoom Dashboard.

Zoom said: This is not the first time that it offered support for two-factor authentication, but previously, it was only available via the web, and now it is available to desktop and mobile customers. The company confirmed that all users will be able to access the new security feature, and this includes those in the company's free tier.

In addition to supporting two-factor authentication for more of its platforms, Zoom also offers users more ways to receive one-time login codes. Previously, a user only had the option to use an authentication app like Google Authenticator to generate their code, but now, they can choose to receive it via SMS.

However, SMS is generally less secure than using an app on the device as it can make intercepting codes easier. Zoom has also added support for recovery codes, which customers can use to regain access to their account if they lose their mobile device.

Zoom said in the middle of last June: It will provide end-to-end encryption technology to all users without exception, after talking about providing the technology to subscribers to the paid service only.

After the sudden growth of the service and the emergence of security problems, the service was banned in many schools around the world, in addition to the space industries company SpaceX owned by the famous entrepreneur (Elon Musk), and it was also banned by governments in Germany, Taiwan and Singapore.

Then Zoom promised to tighten security features that protect users, and a company official said at the end of last May: It plans to enhance the encryption of video calls hosted by customers and institutions, such as schools, but not for free account holders.
